Water Well Maintenance Program

Support the Lifeline: Keep Clean Water Flowing

Give the Needy Foundation has successfully completed 85 water well projects—each one now active, producing clean water, and changing lives.

These wells do more than just quench thirst. They provide a vital water source for families who would otherwise walk miles each day. They also offer life-sustaining water for animals and support local vegetation, which in turn helps communities grow food and sustain livelihoods.

To keep this impact going, we’re launching our Water Well Maintenance Program. While our team visits the wells periodically for inspection, regular and sustainable funding is essential to maintain each site in the long term.

We are calling on generous donors to help us raise the funds needed to keep these wells running strong. Your support ensures clean water continues to flow - not just for people, but for animals and the land they depend on.

Give today. Help us sustain clean water for people, animals, and the future.

Sustainability

Most of our water wells are in Tharparkar, Sindh which is a region of stark contrasts which nestled in the southeastern part of Pakistan. Tharparkar is part of the larger Thar Desert, one of the largest deserts in the world. It is a land of breathtaking beauty, with its rolling sand dunes, attractive scenes, and a vibrant culture deeply rooted in centuries-old traditions. Yet, it is also a land of enduring challenges, where extreme aridity, water scarcity, and poverty have posed formidable obstacles to its people. Tharparkar, located in southeastern Sindh, is a vast desert region known for its arid landscape and harsh climate. The terrain is mostly flat and sandy, with scattered dunes and thorny bushes. Temperatures often rise above 45°C (113°F), and sandstorms frequently sweep across the land. The dry, abrasive conditions wear down surfaces quickly — even the best of paints on water wells doesn’t last long. Despite these challenges, the positive aspect of our project is that the water wells continue to provide a steady flow of water, and the structures remain intact and functional, offering vital relief to the local communities.

Before and After Water Well Maintenance

Water well after 6 months to a year

Annual maintenance of water wells in the desert is essential not only for keeping the wells aesthetically pleasing but also for ensuring their functionality and sustainability.

This covers upkeep in challenging terrain, aesthetic preservation, structural maintenance, making sure the solar panels are in working order, which help the water well motor run.  It helps us identify repainting, and repair any broken taps or structural damage, often caused by animals that rely on the wells and may unintentionally cause wear and tear.  Regular upkeep allows us to update the dedicated signs with the names of the donors and relevant information, keeping the community informed and connected to the support behind these vital resources. More importantly, the maintenance ensures that the wells continue to serve the local population reliably, year after year.

After the maintenance project

While some water wells can be fixed through simple inspections and minor repairs, the reality is that we have a vast number of water wells spread across the region that require regular maintenance due to challenging terrain. To keep all these wells functional and safe, we urgently need donor support. Without sufficient funding, it becomes difficult to maintain the long-term impact of these life-saving water sources.

Cost of Annual Maintenance and inspection services are available for $180 for each water well. Donors will receive annual updates on the water well project, including media coverage.
